Book Spines: A photographic representation of the Brasch Collection

The Brasch Collection consists of 7,193 books.

This was the first fact that I ever learnt about the Brasch collection. Although 7,193 is an undeniably large number, the number alone did not induce the same feeling of shock and awe as when I first saw the collection.

When I first encountered the Brasch Collection, I was overwhelmed by its immense size. There were just so many books, on every topic, taking up a huge amount of shelf space. I found that this same feeling of being overwhelmed by the collection did not occur when reading its written catalogue. Even though all of the books are listed, I believe there is something about seeing the collection that can help one to understand the enormous number of books collected by just one man.

In order to recreate this sensation, I decided to photograph the collection. I felt that this approach would best represent the collection’s size as well as the variety that it contains.
